The music of a chuppah, moment by moment

A chuppah is a sequence of small moments, and each one has a song. The bride's entrance. The ring. The signing. The silence before the glass. Then the room turns over and the hora begins. Guests who have never been to a Jewish wedding will not know what is happening until the music tells them. Nourith is a native of Israel. She sings these pieces in Hebrew, in the order the ceremony asks for, then carries the celebration into the evening.

Questions

What is sung at each moment of the ceremony?

Bereshit Olam for the groom's entrance. Boi Beshalom for the bride's, which is Con te partirò sung in Hebrew, so a couple gets the melody everyone recognises without leaving the language of the ceremony. Ein Od Milvado at the exchange of rings. Lechol Echad during the signing of the ketubah. Yerushalayim Shel Zahav before the breaking of the glass. Every one of them is confirmed with you first.

What happens in the seconds after the glass breaks?

The hora. Hava Nagila, Siman Tov u'Mazal Tov, Sameach, Yismechu Hashamayim and Yevarechecha run as one continuous medley while the room forms a circle and the couple is lifted on chairs. It is the loudest few minutes of the day and it starts almost instantly, so the music has to be moving before the glass is under the foot.

Half our guests are not Jewish. Will they follow any of it?

Yes, if the music carries them. The hora is a circle dance, and a room that has never seen one joins it within a minute when somebody on the microphone invites them in, in English. The ceremony pieces are introduced the same way, briefly, so nobody spends fifteen minutes watching a ritual they cannot read.

Is klezmer part of the day?

It can be, played rather than sung. Klezmer is an instrumental tradition, so Nourith does not perform it herself. She knows the musicians who do, and can bring them in alongside her own set, which keeps one contact for the whole celebration instead of a second supplier arriving on the day with nobody to answer for them.

What can she sing during the dinner?

Hayim Sheli, Yerushalayim Shel Zahav, Horshat Ha'Eucalyptus, Ve'Hi She'Amda and Shema Yisrael sit naturally across a Jewish wedding dinner, alongside the jazz, French and English repertoire. The evening does not have to stay in one language, and it is usually better when it does not.

Can the same artist sing the ceremony and the party?

Yes, and it removes a handover on the most delicate part of the day. The chuppah, the dinner and the dancing sit under one contract with one team. The chuppah can also be booked alone, from 2,000 EUR with Nourith and 3,000 EUR with a trio, if the rest of your evening is already settled. She sings in English, French, Hebrew and Arabic, and she is based in France, so there is no international travel in the budget.

Do we choose the songs, or does she?

You choose, and she advises. The list above is what she performs, and every couple takes a different path through it depending on the community, the rabbi and the families in the room. She listens first, offers what she has learned from the ceremonies she has sung, then composes the sequence with you.
